Professor Weng Onn Chan is a consultant ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon who returned to Adelaide after completing advanced retinal fellowship training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. He is Head of Ophthalmology at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital and leads AEye, an academic artificial intelligence research group focused on clinical AI implementation, registry-based studies, and reducing waste in healthcare. His more than 200 peer-reviewed publications have included work on machine learning for ophthalmology triage and coding, safe use of large language models and cloud-based services in clinical documentation and confidentiality, automated disease registries, AI-generated patient information, AI implications for advertising, and the broader governance, and implementation challenges of medical AI.
