The Scientific Programme Committee invites you to participate in the Annual Scientific Meeting by submitting a Research Abstract for oral and poster presentations. We want to hear about research projects that explore new ideas, stimulate discussion and drive improvements in care. 

Abstracts are to adhere to the template provided on the conference website and in the abstract submission portal. Delegates are welcome to submit multiple abstracts (for the same or different abstract categories); however, each abstract must be submitted separately. Please be sure to review all of the information and instructions regarding abstract submission prior to completing the online portal.

SUBMISSION PROCESS

  • Ensure you use one of the following browsers: INTERNET EXPLORER (v11 or newer) MOZILLA FIREFOX (v44 or newer) SAFARI (v5 or newer)

    Mac Users: if you have trouble submitting your abstract, try submitting from a PC. If you are still have issues, please contact the secretariat.

    Mozilla Users: the security policy in Mozilla often prevents pasting from your clipboard without using the menu commands. You can still cut and paste your abstract into the submission, but you may have to use the menu command rather than ‘control v’ shortcut.

    Ensure your abstract text is less than 250 words for Research Abstracts and 400 words for Change Narrative Abstract as the system will not accept submissions over this limit. The word count does NOT include your title, authoring or cited references.

    Have your abstract open on your own computer to enable you to cut and paste it into the submission system.

  • 1 - Select the presentation type and category

    2 - Provide some keywords to assist in categorisation of your abstract

    3 - Enter the title of your abstract. Please type the title in sentence case (that is lowercase with only the first letter or the first word in capitals) and without any punctuation. A correctly formatted example follows: Title of my presentation for the conference

    4 - Enter the name of all authors and their organisations and indicate the presenting author by ticking the relevant box.

    5 - Type or cut and paste the text of your abstract/synopsis into the relevant field.

    6 - Preview your abstract, make any changes required and finalise your submission and return to your dashboard

    7 - You will receive an email confirmation that your abstract has been successfully submitted. Please check your email junk file in case it has been captured there.

    8 - Should you wish to make any changes to your abstract after you have submitted it, please log onto your online registration dashboard. Click on the “View Submission” then “Preview/edit abstract”.

  • Presentation at the conference is a competitive process. Each abstract will be scored in a blinded fashion by the Scientific Committee.

    The judges' decision to accept a presentation is final.

    The majority of abstracts will be considered for poster presentations. Please indicate if you do NOT want to be considered for an ORAL presentation by choosing 'poster presentation'.

  • Once the reviewing has been completed the conference organisers will notify abstract presenters of their acceptance. Specific presentation instructions will be included in the notification.

  • If eligible, the highest-ranking research abstracts will be considered for an award. You must select to be consiered for an award during the submission process.

    To be eligible for the RM Gibson Prize authors must meet the following criteria:

    • The research was performed as an Advanced Trainee in Geriatric Medicine under the auspices of the RACP Geriatric Medicine STC/SAC.

    • The author will present within 18 months of completing Advanced Training.

    • The research was NOT conducted when under another SAC/STC, such as general medicine, palliative care, etc.

    • The author must be a current member of ANZSGM.

    • The author must not be a previous winner of the RM Gibson Prize.

    To be eligible for the Career Investigator Prize authors must meet the following criteria:

    • The author has received their initial Fellowship (FRACP or equivalent) within the last five years. The last year of Advanced Training was in 2019 onwards.

    • The author must be a current member of ANZSGM.

    • The author must not be a previous winner of the Career Investigator Prize.

    The highest-ranking eligible abstracts for each prize will be grouped together and invited to present in a dedicated session at the Annual Scientific Meeting. The judging panel will be made up of at least 3 people and may include the visiting national and international guest speaker along with at least one member of the ANZSGM Scientific and Research Committee without a conflict of interest. The panel will be agreed upon by the Scientific and Research Committee. Presentations will be judged on the following criteria with a maximum score of 55:

    • General interest (10 points)

    • Novelty (10 points)

    • Scientific validity (20 points)

    • Quality of abstract presentation (10 points)

    • Answering questions (5 points)

    Those abstracts eligible for a RM Gibson or Career Investigator Prize but do not ultimately win will be given a commendation in recognition of the quality of their work.

    Highest ranking posters will be eligible for a Poster Prize. Posters eligible for this prize will be judged by 3 members of the ANZSGM Scientific and Research Committee/ Annual Scientific Meeting Organising Committee according to the following criteria:

    • General interest (10 points)

    • Novelty (10 points)

    • Scientific validity (20 points)

    • Quality of presentation (10 points)

FAQ’s

  • A PowerPoint template will be available for all oral presenters to utilise for their slide deck. The template will be made available once abstract acceptances are sent.

  • There is no template or structure posters need to adhere to other than being portrait orientation and no larger than 1m wide x 1.2m high. Posters presenters will be supplied velcro to adhere their poster to their relevant poster panel onsite at the Conference. Poster are only able to be presented as a physical poster displayed in-person onsite at the Conference.

  • ANZSGM considers 'encore' submissions and trials in progress for all presentation types.

  • Research Abstracts are published in the Australasian Journal of Ageing (AJA). However, they will be rejected if they do not meet the minimum requirements:

    • Abstracts must comply with the abstract template guidelines including the formatting and length.

    • The argument must be followed clearly and supported by a sufficient data.

  • A condition of acceptance is that at least one author or nominated presenter registers for the conference. Presenters are responsible for their own accommodation and registration expenses.
